Arthrosamid®

Book Your Arthrosamid® Injection

Arthrosamid® is a revolutionary, non-surgical injectable treatment for knee osteoarthritis that provides long-lasting pain relief and improved joint mobility. Delivered in a straightforward outpatient appointment, it offers a safe, effective alternative to surgery — helping you return to your daily activities with less pain and greater comfort.

🧪 What Is Arthrosamid®?

Arthrosamid® is an advanced non-biodegradable injectable polyacrylamide hydrogel (iPAAG) developed to provide long-lasting pain relief and improved knee function in patients with mild to moderate knee osteoarthritis. Unlike traditional viscosupplements or corticosteroid injections that typically offer relief for only weeks to months, Arthrosamid® permanently integrates into the joint capsule, cushioning and stabilising the joint to reduce pain and inflammation over the long term (Baer et al., 2021; Overgaard et al., 2024).

Who Is Arthrosamid® For?

This treatment is intended for adults who:

  • Have radiologically confirmed mild to moderate knee osteoarthritis (Kellgren-Lawrence grade 2 or 3) (Baer et al., 2021).

  • Experience persistent knee pain and functional limitations despite conventional therapies such as physiotherapy, NSAIDs, or corticosteroid injections (Bliddal et al., 2022).

  • Wish to delay or avoid knee replacement surgery and prefer a minimally invasive, non-surgical option with a long-lasting effect (Bliddal et al., 2022; Overgaard et al., 2024).

Clinical Evidence and Outcomes

Efficacy:

  • In a prospective, open-label Danish study of 49 patients with knee osteoarthritis, Arthrosamid® injections resulted in highly significant improvements in WOMAC scores (Baer et al., 2021):

    • Pain reduction averaged −17.7 points at 52 weeks (p < 0.001)

    • Stiffness improved by −11.0 points

    • Physical function increased by −14.9 points

  • The study reported that 62% of patients met the OMERACT–OARSI responder criteria for meaningful clinical improvement after one year (Baer et al., 2021).

Long-Term Benefits:

  • A 3-year follow-up confirmed sustained benefits across pain, stiffness, and function domains, with no significant decline in outcomes compared to 1-year data (Bliddal et al., 2022).

  • A 5-year extension of the trial (Overgaard et al., 2024) showed that over half of the patients avoided knee replacement surgery and maintained improved knee function with a low incidence of adverse events.

  • Ten-year data further validate the treatment’s durability and safety, with no device-related serious adverse events reported (Overgaard et al., 2024).

Comparative Effectiveness:

  • Arthrosamid® has demonstrated superiority or comparable efficacy to hyaluronic acid injections, especially in younger patients (<70 years) and those with normal BMI, with longer-lasting symptom relief (Baer et al., 2021; Bliddal et al., 2022).

What to Expect on the Day of Treatment

Your Arthrosamid® injection is a simple outpatient procedure that usually takes less than an hour:

  • You’ll be welcomed and guided through the process by our compassionate team.

  • The skin around your knee will be thoroughly cleaned and numbed with a local anaesthetic to ensure your comfort.

  • The Arthrosamid® hydrogel will be carefully injected into your knee joint.

  • You’ll rest briefly before going home the same day.

  • Mild swelling, discomfort, or stiffness may occur for a few days post-injection — these symptoms are common and usually resolve quickly (Baer et al., 2021).

  • Our team will provide detailed aftercare advice and schedule follow-up to monitor your progress.

Safety and Risks

Arthrosamid® has a favourable safety profile supported by extensive clinical use and research:

  • Common side effects include short-term mild swelling, stiffness, or discomfort, which typically resolve within days (Baer et al., 2021).

  • Serious adverse events such as infections or allergic reactions are extremely rare (Bliddal et al., 2022).

  • No cases of implant migration or significant joint damage have been reported in long-term studies (Overgaard et al., 2024).

Cost

The total cost of Arthrosamid® treatment, including consultation, injection, and follow-up care, is £2,950.
